At what age should I have my child stop thumb sucking
Thumb Sucker
My son is now going on 18 months and I am worried that his thumb sucking may start to make his teeth come in crooked. I heard that things like pacifiers and thumb sucking are not a good thing for a baby to do once their teeth come in.
I have been trying to get him to stop the thumb sucking but it make him upset when I do. How long should I let this continue? Any advices would me helpful.

I would say that is is normal for a baby to be thumb sucking. They seem to stop around the age of two. Watch your son if he is still thumb sucking in six months you may want to try harder to get him to stop. I too have heard prolong thumb sucking may cause a problem for incoming teeth.

My child is three and still sucks her thumb. I was told by her dentist that as long as she is not still thumb sucking or using a pacifier when her adult teeth come in she would not have any problems.

As for me I would suggest not trying to get her to stop sucking her thumb until she is ready to give it up on her own. You are only causing your baby to get stress out as well as yourself. Do not worry about it until she is much old with adult teeth coming in.

Come on lets get real. There is nothing wrong with trying to get your baby to stop thumb sucking and or using a pacifier as soon as possible. In fact for me and my wife we decided never to use a pacifier with our children.
Was it more work on our part to be able to calm baby down. Yes but we felt it was well worth the effect. Nothing I dislike more then to see a three or four year old baby with a pacifier in their mouth.
Your question about does it damage teeth to thumb suck, would be yes. Prolonged thumb-sucking can lead to serious dental and speech problems.
