Baby nick names
What do you think of baby nick names
I have a daughter who is four and her name is Madaline. I will only call her by that name but my friends and family call her Maddie and I really dislike it. I keep correcting them but they do not seem to stop. They say it is just a nick name. I say if I wanted her to be called that then I would have named her that. What is up with nick names? And how do you get people to stop using them?

I hear what you are saying. My son is named Johnathan after is grand father. At first some family members and friends would call him John or Johnie I really dislike them shorting his name.
I would tell them to call him by his full name. If they continue to shorten or nick named his name out. I would inform them that they are be disrespectful of my wishes and I want them to stop. That normally worked.

For the most part only close family members or friends uses nick names. It is a sign that they have a closer relationship to you, then others who may come to know you.
Nick names are not bad unless the person in question does not want to go by them. At that point using a nick name against the person wishes would be sign of great disrespect.
Explain to people that want to shorten your daughters name that not to do so. If when she is old enough to make choices on her own she wants to have you call her by a nick name then so be it.
