Root canal on a baby tooth

My nine year old needs a root canal

Is it normal for a dentist to want to do a root canal on a baby tooth?   I was just told that my nine year old needs a root canal on one of his baby teeth.  He is nine years old,  why doesn’t the dentist just pull it?  I would think he is going to just lose the tooth with the next year or so anyway.  Is this just a way of getting more money out of me?
