Baby root canal procedure

I forgot to ask what is the procedure of having a baby root canal?  My child is young and I worry it would be painful.  I had a root canal done once and it did hurt a little afterwords.  Will the dentist put my son to sleep or will he be awake?  Any information would be helpful.  Thanks.
