Dental work and pregnancy, what is safe
I am having a really hard time with my tooth that needs to have a root canal or something done to it to stop this god awful pain I am having. I am three months pregnant and my dentist is scared to do anything to help me. I got him to give me some antibiotics for abscess that is starting by that tooth. He is so very paranoid about doing any dental work on me because I am pregnant regardless of the pain that I am in.
So he stated he would not do anything else for me and referred me to an Endodontics. I think he is just shoving me off onto another dentist. I do not want to do anything that can cause harm to my unborn baby but staying in this much pain for another six months is out of the question. I can not see how that can be any good for my baby either. Anyone with useful advise please.

Well it is not like you can not have dental work because you are pregnant. The dentist however needs to know how to treat a pregnant women.
I think you are being to hard on your general dentist. If their office is not set up to do work on a pregnant women, or if your root canal goes beyond what he feels he can do then he is doing the correct thing by referring you off to a specialist. Would you rather he treat you when he feels it goes beyond what he should be doing?
Go to a Endodontics dentist. Let them know how many months you are pregnant the dentist office may wish to speak to your OBGYN to confirm treatment.

No one should be in any unnecessary pain while they are pregnant. You are right being in that kind of pain for six more months would not be good for you or your baby. Also you do not want any kind of abscess or infection going untreated.
With that said you need to work closely with your dentist and possibly you OBGYN during treatment. I think by what you stated above that your family dentist is doing the right thing by not treating you. If he does not feel like he can why force the issue? There are many family dentist that do not do root canal at all let alone on a pregnant women. Going to a specialist just makes scene.
