Thumb/Pacifier sucking, which is worse
My six month old son uses a pacifier right now. I have been trying to ween him off of it before he starts teething. When I do take the pacifier away he will start to thumb suck. I am now sure which is worse. Having him thumb suck or giving him the pacifier.
At least with the pacifier I feel I still can take it away from him but you can not do that if he thumb suck. I do not want him to have a thumb sucking habit when he is older. I don’t want to encourage either, but at loss as to which is worse and how I can ween from the pacifier and have him not go right to his thumb.

I think that a thumb is worse. Thumb sucking can be come such a habit that I have seen old child and even heard of a few adults that still suck their thumb.
A pacifier can be removed and not given back to a child. I let my daughter have a pacifier until she was about fourteen months. Then I weened her from it. That took about a month to get her used to not having it.
As far as thumb sucking I think it may be little hard to ween if you have a older child still sucking their thumb. I would advise just removing there hand from there mouth each time you see them doing it.
