Two dental cavites on my six year old. Need dental care

Oct. 1st 2010

I just found out that my six year old daughter has two cavities.  I am not sure why this is, I brush her teeth after breakfast and dinner each day.  Although they are just her baby teeth I do not want her to continue getting cavities.

The dentist told me that she need to start flossing.  How do you get a six year old to floss? I try flossing for but she is a bit of a pain by then and I get tired of fighting with her to stay still.   I also would like advise on getting dental insurance since I had to pay for the fillings my self I found out how expensive dental work can be.  So advise on that would be good too.

Dental care, 4 year old and 6 crowns.

Aug. 10th 2010

My husband took our four year old son to his first dental appointment the other day.  What should have been just a normal dental appointment for a check up and basic cleaning turned into a nightmare.

My husband was told that our son has dental carries.  which means he has two small cavities and four large size cavities all on his back teeth.   Instead of just doing the filling the dentist is stating he should have all six teeth crowned.   We have dental insurance but even with insurance this would be a large bill.

My husband did not do anything at the time but made another appointment in two weeks for all this work.   I am against him having all these crowns and think the dentist is full of it.  My son never had problems with is teeth and I have him brush his teeth twice a day like he should.  I watch him so I know he is brushing them like he should.

I work during the day and my husband at night.  So I can not take my son into the dentist without taking a day off from work and my husband upset saying we are not taking care of our son teeth. He does not want to get a second opinion since he said he knows this dentist and knows he would not make things up.    Am I the only one that thinks this is too much?

Dental Care for baby, My daughter is seven and has a bad tooth

Jul. 10th 2010

I just found out that my daughter has a bad tooth.  The dentist told me that my daughter has a large size cavity on her back molar.   The dentist told me not only should he do the filling but because it is rather big he should crown the tooth.

I do not have a problem with doing the filling but a crown on a baby tooth?  I am not sure that is really nessary.  My dental insurance will cover 80 % of the filling but only 50% for the crown.  Should I pay to have it crowned or just get the filling?

Dental Care, Son is scared of the dentist.

Jul. 7th 2010

My son who is ten is very scared about going to the dentist.  Just having him go to get his cleaning make him upset.  My problem is now he has three small cavities that need to have fillings done.

When I told him we will need to make an appointment to have the filling done he started to freak out about it.  Saying he did not want to have the filling done.  I really do not understand why he so scared of going to the dentist.

Up until now he never had more then a cleaning and his dentist is a really nice guy our whole family goes to him.  My husband is fed up and said that our son is going to get the filling done whether or not he likes it.   I think my son is just acting out but if he is really scared can anyone offer me some good advise.

Baby dental care, Six crowns on a five year old

Jun. 30th 2010

My husband took our daughter to the dentist where he was told she had six very large size cavities.  The dentist stated that he can do filling but wants to put metal crown on the teeth.  All the teeth that have the cavities are in the back and he said since she will need this teeth until ten or eleven when the adult teeth start to come in the crowns will protect the teeth better.

I feel that the dentist is way out of line I brush my daughter teeth and do not feel she could have so many cavities.  Now my  husband is all mad at me saying I am not taking good enough care of my daughter teeth.  I told him I want a second opinion but he said he is not going to get one.

That he is paying for the dental insurance and it not the dentist but it me.  I am so upset right now. It is like my husband is trying to pick a fight with me over this even though I am doing all I can.  He said he will have the crowns done and for us to move forward and just take better care of her teeth.  I still want a second opinion.

I feel that the dentist is wrong. Even if she need filling I do not think the dentist needs to put caps on her teeth.  I think he just trying to get extra money and at the same time he is causing problems with my husband and I over this.   Should I fight to get the second opinion or just let it go since they are baby teeth and take the blame.

Tooth decay Prevention, helps keep your dental cost low

Jun. 12th 2010

Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is the destruction of the outer surface of a tooth from acid forming bacteria that is produced by food containing carbohydrates (sugars and starches).

Tooth Decay Prevention

Brush your teeth twice a day with a tooth paste that contains fluoride. Preferably, brush after each meal and before bedtime to help reduce the bacteria from staying on your teeth for a certain length of time.

You may wish to consider these helpful tips as well:

– Floss your teeth daily to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

– Check with your dentist regarding the use of a supplemental fluoride which strengthens your teeth and helps prevents tooth decay.

– Consider dental sealants which is a plastic like substance placed on the top of molars to protect the teeth from decay.

– Use mouth wash with fluoride. Many of them kill 50% or more of the bacteria that cause tooth decay.

– Chewing gum with the ingredient Xylitol © may also kill some of the bacteria which causes tooth decay.

Tooth decay on two front baby teeth

Jun. 10th 2010

My six year old daughter has a cavity between her two front up teeth.   Since the cavity is between the teeth both teeth have some decay so that a filling is required for both.  This will be her first filling since she never had cavity before.  The dentist said the cavities are small right now.  So I wonder if I should wait and see if they get any bigger before making her have dental work on teeth that will fall out when she is a little older.

My daughter is not so good at the dental office and I would like for her to be older before having to have much more then the cleanings.  Is it okay to wait it out for a while and see what happens or just do the filling now why she is still so young.

Can I buy dental insurance and have it cover for current filling needed.

Jun. 7th 2010

My son Gregory needs to have two filling done ASAP.  He is seven years old but I just lost my dental insurance when I changed jobs.  My current job offers dental insurance but not until I have been with them for six months.  I have only been at this new job for less then two months.

Can I buy dental insurance for my son to cover the current filling he needs then cancel when my dental insurance though work kick in?   I was told that even if I bough dental insurance they may not cover for the current filling because I know my son needs them and it would be preexisting.  Is that true? Would buying dental insurance now be a waste of money?

My sixteen year old daughter has a retained baby tooth.

May. 20th 2010

My daughter who is now sixteen has a retained baby tooth.  It the first molar behind her eye tooth.  With in the last two weeks she said that tooth was starting to hurt her a little.  I will be taking her back into the dentist to see if she has something wrong with it.   I am wondering could she get a cavity in that tooth when we just had X-rays two months ago for her normal visit and everything was fine then.

I am worried that if she does have a cavity can the dentist put a filling in a baby tooth?  She does not have a replacement adult tooth for the baby tooth and I would hate for her to lose it and be left with a gap.    What can be done?  Advise please

Son has BBTD how should I care for it until he see a dentist.

May. 18th 2010

My husband and I had a casual oral hygiene routine when it came to our 18 month old son.  We would brush his teeth but only once a day.   We though that would be enough since I did wipe his teeth after eating.  However with in the last four weeks notice that he started to have bad breath that he did not have before.

I took a flash light and looked into his mouth and it seem as if he had some plaque buildup. Both myself and my husband became more aggressive with brushing his teeth.  We then would brush his teeth twice to three times a day.   However, even after doing that we started to notice a light brown spot on two of his teeth.   I am worried he may have BBTD

My husbands  family dental insurance starts in another three weeks.  So I am wondering if it is okay to wait the additional three weeks until the dental insurance kicks in,  or should I go now.  We have been waiting for his insurance to start up to this point but I am worried about my sons teeth.  I feel bad but did not think at the time only brushing his teeth once a day would be an issue.
I did not let him have the bottle while he slept only when he was a wake and I would then wipe his mouth afterwords.  Can the BBTD spread to the other teeth if we wait the three weeks?  Financially it would be better if we waited but just not sure what to do now.
