New York baby dental care, Dental flossing for a child

I live in NY with my son and he is going on six.  He does brush his teeth on his own but I have not yet started him with flossing.   I still floss his teeth before bed time each night.   He is a bit of a slow learner and I do not want to rush him but what is a good age for a child to normally start flossing their own teeth?  I do not want to keep him behind either.
