Baby Dental, Are family dental plans worth buying?

Tuesday, Jun. 23rd 2015 9:53 AM

Question: I am self employed and do not have dental insurance. I was wondering if a family dental plan is really worth buying or not.  I have two teeth that are starting to bother me and would like to see a dentist.  My wife and son are okay for now but I would also like for them to go in for a dental check up. However,  the few plans I have review does not seem like they are really saving you money when a crown still can cost up to $250-$400 that does not seem like a big saving to me.

Answer: I am guessing you have not had a crown lately without having dental insurance in place. Crown cost without insurance can get as high as $750.00 or more. We have some HMO dental insurance plans that crown cost range around $150 – $300 depending on the plan. Add into any cost if you need a filling or a root canal before having a crown and your cost can be more in the $2000 range. Having dental insurance is one of the best ways to control your family’s dental care cost.
