Baby dental care, Teething gels, are they safe to use or should I just stick to a teething rings

My daughter just started teething and it seems very bad for her.  I have been told that teething gel are not really all the safe to us on a teething baby.  I am not sure where I heard it but I know I have that has been what has stop me from using it.   Does anyone know for sure if that true.
