One year old and a swimming pool

What is a good age to start teaching your child to swim?

I have a very happy and curious little girl.  She is starting to find her feet and learning how to walk.  I have a swimming pool in our back yard though it is not an issue now and it is gated I still worry about her finding her way in when she is older.

I have taken her in the pool with my husband but when should you start to really teach them how to swim?  What is a good age?  I would like her to learn as fast as she can.  The pool will still be off limits unless we are with her but knowing how to swim is important when you have one.

Any one else with a pool and kids?  When did you start teaching them how to swim?
