Baby Dental, Should my child see a pediatric dentist?

Wednesday, Dec. 31st 2014 9:24 AM

Question: My son is 18 months of age and I been told he should see a dentist for a regular dental check up. However not sure if he can just go to our family dentist or does he have to see a pediatric dentist.

Answer: This is a common question for parents to ask.  It is best advise for child under the age of six to see a pediatric dentist.  In fact many family dentist will not provide treatment for children that are not at least five or six years of age.

For the same reason you do not take your child to your own internist, you take her to a pediatrician. Children are not miniature adults. Their bodies are very different, and so are their teeth. A pediatric dentist has expertise in those differences which is why pediatric dentist are often suggested.
