Space maintainers for a five year old

Baby teeth and space maintainers

My five year old daughter knocked out two of her front teeth.   She was running in the play area in the park and fell on the slide.  We took her to the doctor and she is okay now but two of her front teeth fell out.

They were not due to come out yet.  So I was wondering if she should have a space maintainer.  Should I talk to a dentist about one or is it necessary?  My mom says that is just a waste of money since she will be getting her adult teeth in.  However I am worried about them coming in correctly now.   Well a space maintainer keep her teeth from coming in crooked?

Well I sure your mom means well but is she a dentist? If she is not a dentist then saying it would be a waste of money may not be correct. Space maintainer help make sure her other teeth come in correctly or that they do not start to shift out of place.

I would advise at least talking to a dentist about it. Find out more so you can decide if they are right for your and your child.

I do not think that space maintainers are a waste of money. In fact having them may save you more money in the long run. Talk to your dentist see what they advise.

My daughter is 5 and she fell a couple of months ago and knocked out all four top front teeth. (Sort of, she actually knocked them back and had to have them surgically removed) I wanted to get space maintainers for her but her pediatric dentist, my dentist, her oral surgeon and an orthodontist in town all told me not to. They all said those teeth don’t need maintainers, they’ll come in just fine. If it was a molar then she’d need one. They also said that they are hard to maintain (space maintainers) and break off easily.

So far, the others haven’t moved up. Hope that helps.
