Pediatric root canal

What is a Pulpotomy?

My three year old son has dental carries on four of his top teeth.  Two which the dentist said he could just do a filling,  and the other two he wants to do a pulpotomy.   What is a pulpotomy?  Is it a root canal?  I am taking him to a pediatric dentist and I trust what he is advising,  I would just like to know more about what a pulpotomy really is.
