Dental sealants on baby teeth

Saturday, Apr. 17th 2010 4:31 PM

I am a single working poor mom and I live on a very fixed income.  So with that said this is my question.  My son dental hygienist is strongly recommending that I have dental sealants put on several of his molars, even though my son has no cavities and there is nothing wrong with his teeth.

I do not see the point of having her put sealants on teeth that will fall out in a few more years.  When I stated this to her she got very put off by me.  She then got an attitude as if I was not a good mom for not wanting to spend the extra money needed.

I will gladly spend the extra money if I felt it was a necessary expense?  Can anyone give me a good reason why I should have this done when my son has no cavities?  I though you put sealants on teeth that are week or prone to cavities.   If I am wrong please tell me so.

Off hand sometimes a dentist may want to put sealants on baby teeth if your child has week teeth or bad tooth enamel. A child could have no cavities but is still open to get them if their tooth enamel is week.

Another reason for dental sealants maybe if the child is not brushing and taking care of their teeth good enough sometimes sealants is suggested as a preventive measure.

Either way no dentist or dental hygienist in this case should give you any kind of attitude. The finial say is yours. It sounds like the dental hygienist did not fully explain the reason why she suggesting sealants.

You may want a second opinion. At least get a dentist without the attitude. Then do what you feel works best for you and your son needs.
