Baby dental care needed for four year old and chipped tooth

Friday, Aug. 27th 2010 8:18 AM

My four year old son just chipped his front baby tooth.  Even though I work I do not get dental insurance neither does my son dad.  He is working and helps out as much as he can but does not get dental insurance.

He said it is only a baby tooth and not to worry about a little chip since there is no way we can afford the extra money right now.  I agree but still worried about it.  My son has not yet seen a dentist and now he has this chipped tooth.  Should I still wait it out?

The ADA advises that you should take your child to see the dentist when the first cut their teeth or when the turn one. Your son is four and you stated he has not yet seen a dentist.

I think you should take him in just to see the dentist for his dental check up. I agree that a chip baby tooth does not really need to be fixed with a crown or anything

However a dentist would be able to make sure that the tooth is find and only has a chip.

If you asking for advise then yes take your son to see the dentist. The tooth may look only chipped but he may have knocked it loose and you do not want it falling out too soon or you will need to get a space maintainer.

Also that he is four you should just take him to see a dentist anyway to get his dental check. Now if money is and issue may I suggest that you buy dental insurance for you and your son. You can buy a dental HMO insurance plan. They normally have an affordable monthly premium

Hopefully you have some dental clinics in your area that you may be able to take your son to. As far as the chip tooth I guess that a would be a judgment call on your part. I would at least keep an eye on it for a while.

The other problem you may have with a chipped tooth is now it is more open to tooth decay. You may want to have a dental bonding and sealant done just to give it the added protection.
