Baby dental care, How do you care for your baby gums

My four month son is due to start teething in just a few more months.  Right now I just wipe his mouth after nursing to get the excess milk out.   I am not sure if I should be doing more for his gum care?  Would love to hear some suggestions.  And I am a little worried about the teething stage.  Is it really as bad as some people make it out to be?
