What is the role of having good dental care during pregnancy?

I an pregant for the first time and I heard that for many peole they can start to have teeth and gum issues during pregnancy that they nevery add prior. Is it because the baby also uses up the mother’s calcium? I currently have really good teeth and I want to keep them healthy please advise.
