What qualifies as a dental emergency?

I am new to having dental insurance I get my dental benefits though my job so I just get what they gave me. However I am not sure what I am and am not covered for.  Like what qualifies as a dental emergency?  If  my son has a  tooth ache is that an emergency? I only ask because I was told I would have waiting periods for the first six months with the exception of dental emergencies.
