Baby teeth care need help

Going out to mothers: I have a 13 month old son that I will be taking to the dentist.  I have never brushed his teeth yet.  Should I be brushing them now?  If so with what and how many times a day should I be brushing them?  His appointment is not until next year in the middle of Jan.  I am just not sure if I should have been brushing his teeth sooner or wait until the first dental appointment
