Baby dental care, Six crowns on a five year old
My husband took our daughter to the dentist where he was told she had six very large size cavities. The dentist stated that he can do filling but wants to put metal crown on the teeth. All the teeth that have the cavities are in the back and he said since she will need this teeth until ten or eleven when the adult teeth start to come in the crowns will protect the teeth better.
I feel that the dentist is way out of line I brush my daughter teeth and do not feel she could have so many cavities. Now my husband is all mad at me saying I am not taking good enough care of my daughter teeth. I told him I want a second opinion but he said he is not going to get one.
That he is paying for the dental insurance and it not the dentist but it me. I am so upset right now. It is like my husband is trying to pick a fight with me over this even though I am doing all I can. He said he will have the crowns done and for us to move forward and just take better care of her teeth. I still want a second opinion.
I feel that the dentist is wrong. Even if she need filling I do not think the dentist needs to put caps on her teeth. I think he just trying to get extra money and at the same time he is causing problems with my husband and I over this. Should I fight to get the second opinion or just let it go since they are baby teeth and take the blame.

This does sound like something you need to calmly talk to your husband about. Maybe he was just upset at the time he found all this out.
Even if your daughter needs all this dental work you should explain to him that you do not like how he is making you feel over it.
I do not think off hand by what you said that the dentist is out of line if she really does have six very large size cavities.
If they were small cavities she may not have needed the crowns but the more they have the drill away to get the cavity out the weaker the tooth so putting a crown seams to make sense to me.

Well if had that happen with my son I may have felt the same way. It is not fair but it is probably how I would have acted too.
He takes your daughter to the dentist and finds out all this I am sure the dentist must have gotten on him about taking better care of your daughter teeth. He might have been upset by the time he got home.
Come on it is clear that if your five year old has so many large size cavities something is not being done right. Even if you are the one brushing her teeth. Though at five she should be able to do that for herself.

Prior to this last dental appointment when did your daughter last seen the dentist? If you are taking her to see the dentist twice a year once every six months then some of these cavities should have been spotted at her last appointment.
Did you question your husband about this? And why the dentist did not saying thing prior to now? Child can just have week teeth or bad teeth enamel causing them to get cavities much easier then normal. When that happens a dentist would point that out and may advise having sealants put on the child teeth to help avoid future cavities.
I would put forth these questions. If your dentist can not address them then I would tell my husband that it makes sense to have a second dental opinion. That you are not shifting blame but that you want to make sure with out a doubt that your daughter really needs this amount of dental work.
